Over the years, one of the most difficult tasks for email marketers has always been overcoming the spam filter. Most email providers' spam filters are designed to keep unwanted communications out, particularly those that may include viruses, phishing scams, or other potentially hazardous content.

However, it has gotten even more difficult in recent years. Now, in addition to spam boxes, we have'social' and 'promotional' boxes that further categorize our messages and make it difficult for any of them to garner attention.

Language


One of the first and most significant things you can do to avoid the spam box is to avoid using terms and phrases that computers connect with spam. 

This is similar to how Google looks for keywords, however the keywords are negative this time. Words like "purchase," "free," "discount," "hurry," and "Viagra" are examples of words to avoid.

That last one, hopefully, isn't something you'd be writing about anyhow!

Structure


It's no longer enough to "not appear like spam" if you want to get into the main inbox; you must also "look like a personal message."

Utilize the option in your autoresponder that allows you to use the recipient's name in the message to do this. 

Similarly, attempt to format your message as if it were an email. This entails beginning with "Dear [Name]" and ending with "Best regards."

You should also avoid using features that a client might link with a promotional image or that make you appear less authentic in your contact. That means limiting the number of hyperlinks you use (to just one) and eliminating large graphics.

Reputation of the Sender


The most important thing to remember is to keep your emphasis on providing excellent value over time. People will open your messages if you do this, and they will actually read them.

This can help you enhance your'sender reputation,' preventing you from being banned.
